Artwork > Into & Out of the Forest

When settlers first arrived in Western Massachusetts the border of an individual's property was marked with a pile of stones. Representatives from the township would walk the perimeter of the land and when they agreed on a point, each person picked up and stone and pitched it into the pile. These stone piles were eventually remarked with iron pipes, then concrete bounds, and finally the ubiquitous orange flagging.
